Those Cheeky Brits

The Art Council of Wales today awarded Sue Williams, an artist from Swansea, £20,000 to “explore cultural attitudes towards female buttocks.”  She plans on creating plaster casts of women’s behinds to try and see their place in contemporary culture as it applies in Europe and Africa.

I’d like to think this study will help society, but I’m afraid she’ll just use the money to travel the world.  This begs the question: did anyone check her credentials before giving her this money?  This is just a prime example of what you can do with an excellent grant writer!

My personal favorite comments on this are on slashdot: http://science plavix generic.slashdot.org/story/09/06/29/1733250/Artist-Wins-pound20000-Grant-To-Study-Womens-Butts

Battery got a cold?

Those smart folks at M.I.T. have come up with a new way of making a battery, using a virus.  They have developed a virus, the kind that infects bacteria not humans, that covers itself in particular metallic atoms and binds to make itself into the anode and cathode of a battery.

M.I.T. claims this could be the free energy revolution for batteries that we’ve all been looking for.  Can you image a really cheap to manufacture bluehost?? battery that when used up will fully degrade when thrown away?  Now if we can just get crakin’ on wireless power delivery, that would make my wife happy.
